When it comes to the novel, A Passage to India, written by E.M.Foster, it has become a cliche that a majority of scholars and professors focus on its colonism and cultural conflicts. However, the author’s opinion on feminism is enhanced in the novel, which is worth studying. As the pioneer author, Zhang Ailing is a representative female who emphasizes feminism. In her novels, she reveals her attitude towards different female by describing their life and destiny. In the thesis, Foster and Zhang Ailing will be compared in order to illustrate the differences between western female and eastern ones. The analysis of society, culture, education and life background will be essential to the thesis. By analyzing the protagonists of two novels and the authors’ ways of description, the readers will better understand what the feminism is and how it reflects in the novels. By comparing two novels, the conclusion that the differences between western female and eastern ones will be drawn. Moreover, the significance and meaning for modern female will be revealed in the thesis.
