Most Chinese interpretations of e.e.Cummings’“in just-” are affirmative,believing the whole story it told was a relaxed and simple one. But givenCummings’ considerable interests inerotic poems and his experiences of childhood, this idea seems to be too plain.There exists another possibility to analyze this whole poem, a sinister and darker one. Therefore we canundermine its innocent veil and find out another reasonable interpretation ofits gist.

According to Freud’s theory, using the method ofpsychoanalysis we can dig into the life of e.e.Cummings. It’s known that heonce experienced the World War 1, and that’s the indispensable point whenanalyzing Cummings’ theme of poem, and his odd, unconventional structure.

“In just-” was one of the poems included in ChansonsInnocents, which was published in 1923, the year after the show-up of hisnovel The Enormous Room, the book that recorded his three and a halfmonths’ military detention. By analyzing this novel, we can find out histhoughts and feelings, his attitude towards war and human. Knowing more aboutthat period when he was in prison, hence we can better understand those thingthat he want to deliver in his poem “in just-”. Combined with the figures heused, it’s easy to tell that this poem can not be simply written just forpraising the childhood and spring, but describing a horrible scenery.
