污染场地是社会经济发展的产物，常常伴随城市扩张或城市结构布局的调整产生。
污染场地目前已对人类社会和生态环境造成严重危害，成为世界性环境问题之一。
目前，中国污染场地的调查与修复工作正处于快速发展的机遇期，公众环保意识的提高，国家配套法律的出台，政绩考核指标的转变，促使深入思考并着力解决污染场地的技术问题。
