This paper will mainly discuss the Black Cat, which is one of the most famous works written by Allan Poe, is a story about a man exists on the edge of rationality and insanity. From the perspective of the rhetoric, the author will analyze the symbolism in Black Cat. Firstly, The story once appeared two cats, the symbols of these two cats are different and it needs concrete analysis combining with the novel’s central idea. Then, the protagonist also reflects the phenomenon that capitalism devours human and diminishes humanity step by step. Later, this story’s theme needs to be further analyzed, including humanity inquiry and the exploration of human’s mental world – once human did evil, he was actually on the path toward self-destruction without return. The relationship between theme and symbolism will be discussed finally.
