his paper aims togive a detailed analysis of the conversational implicature in Chinesegovernment press conferences from the perspectives of Cooperative Principle andPoliteness Theory. Firstly, this paper will introduce the basicknowledge of the Chinese government press conference in terms of itsdefinition, elements, characteristics and functions. It will also analyze thestatus of studies on Cooperative Principle and on press conferences. Secondly,it will give a review of Grice’s Cooperative Principle, Leech’s PolitenessPrinciple and Brown and Levinson’s Politeness Theory. It will introduce theviolation of four maxims of Cooperative Principle primitively. Next, itwill point out the factors why conversational implicature occurs and theoccasion when it occurs. Then, based on the Cooperative Principle andPoliteness Theory, this paper will present some case studies to analyze theconversational implicature in Chinese government press conference. It willexplain the literal meaning and real intention of the discourses. Finally, itwill point out benefits of the application of Cooperative Principle andPoliteness Theory in real news events and give suggestions to spokesman ofChinese government press conferences.
