The paper develops around the differencesand similarities of woman’s status by the comparison of A Dream in Red Mansionsand Pride and Prejudice. It will analyze the topic in terms of the relationshipbetween mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, woman’s right of choosing a husband,widow’s life, and inheritance of property, and so on. Polygamy and monogamy arealso involved in the comparison, because I think the lover system in westernand concubine system in Chinese is a very interesting phenomenon in society.The women in this two systems split marriages, but at the same time, to someextent, they also maintain the marriages.
