Among Toni Morrison’s eight novels, Song of Solomon is her third novel, which tells a story of the life experiences of “Milkman” in Michigan and his treasure hunt and root-seeking in the southern part of America. This novel earned her position in the history of American literature because of the depth of its thoughts and its artistic value. As a marginalized culture under the domination of western centrism, many African-American gradually lose their unique culture identity and traditions. Concerned on this phenomenon, the essence of African culture, as well as the reality and the future of African American nation, composes the main part of her writing. This paper aims to explore the cultural identity and cultural tradition of African American, which enable us to better understand how to preserve ethnic culture and integrate into the mainstream culture.
