This paper focuses on Ezra Pound’s masterpiece Cathay by elaborating how Pound introduced ancient Chinese poems to western literature, especially poems, with his exquisite cultural perception. Based on precedent researches, the purpose of the paper is to explore the enlightenment and limitations that Cathay conveys to the cross cultural research, as well as Pound’s great contributions to the reflection of mutual learning between different civilizations. Scrutinizing Cathay and the original Chinese poems, the author will analyze Pound’s translation skills of interpreting cultural understanding, for instance, alienation and overlap of images, together with the embodiment of oriental civilization and modernity.
