Michael Jackson is an American icon who went global. His ability to fuse together West African, African American, and Anglo–European musical influences lent Jackson’s craft a broadly inclusive appeal. Michael Jackson reflects and represents currents of diversity of American identity and achievement of the “American Dream” of upward mobility based on industriousness. Yet the reality of the “American Dream” bred some disquieting dynamics, particularly for Michael Jackson. After all, “the American dream was a discourse of both whiteness and racism” (Grewal 2005, 7).At the height of his popularity in the United States, Jackson became involved in what would be the start of a commitment to philanthropy around the world. The story of Michael Jackson went far beyond the musical arena. He was a humanitarian who advocated for children and supported AIDS and cancer research as well as causes like the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. One of the most significant ways Michael Jackson influenced the world was through global culture. In addition to changing music forever, Michael Jackson changed the world forever, including areas that were seemingly untouched by Western influence. He has not only revolutionized pop culture, but also his time with a cultural awareness which knows no bound.This thesis aims to analyze how Michael Jackson was able to bring a sense of connection to all corners of the world, how he constructed a global dream of peace and harmony, and created a global culture that unifies via a cross-cultural perspective. Today, when both oriental and occidental civilizations shedding identical and universal tears for the loss, one can at least rejoice about one thing: that all people are suffering from the same thing. Michael Jackson has provided us, with his way of walking in place, something unexpected: the first global peace for the community of common destiny.
