Postmodernism refers to a kind of culturalideological trend formed in the 1960s, prevailing in the 1970s and 1980s andhaving a significant impact on Western society, which is reflected inarchitecture, sociology, law and other aspects. Generally speaking,postmodernism literature advocates new value orientation and thinking mode, andcriticizes traditional ethics and morality. By analyzing thetexts and writing methods of Fowles’ s The French Lieutenant’s Woman, andanalyzing the postmodernism reflected in the novel,the basic characteristics ofpostmodernism literature are further derived:1.Illusory and changeablecharacterization. 2.Free and open narration.3.Multiple open juxtaposition
