With the feminine liberation, more and morewomen devoted themselves to writing since the end of 19^th century.And it is from 20^th century that there were a number of African-Americanwomen writers coming to the literary stage. In any case, African-American femaleliterature was excluded from the mainstream literature at its beginning becauseof racial discrimination and gender discrimination. Until the second half ofthe 20^th century when the civil rights movement and the women'sliberation movement were growing higher and higher, African-American femaleliterature ushered in a new phase of prosperity and development.

Based on examples of two African-Americanwomen writers with great reputation since 1980s and their representative works,Alice Walker with The Color Purple and Toni Morrison with Song ofSolomon, this paper discusses the development of African-American femaleliterature in its climax as well as the same characteristics and subtledifferences between the above two works.
