Song of Solomon is a novel that relates how a black male has shaken off the shackles of status of other, established self-identity, and looked for self-values. This novel tells the story of Milkman who becomes clear-headed and strong-minded from one who got lost, forgot his race. He was indifferent to those around him at first. Then, he alone came to the South to seek the roots of his ancestors and comprehended their traditional culture and their ideals. Therefore, this process of change indicates that identity is closely connected with social recognition. This paper aims to analysis cultural roots in the book in terms of self-identity and cultural change. Specifically, including the parts of identity crisis of Milkman, cultural investigation of himself, community connection and finally the identity recognition.
