Theatre has always been one of the most important entertainments inpeople’s leisure life. In recent years, theatre is becoming increasinglypopularized in China due to the effort of countless artists and successfulcommercial operation. More and more foreign plays are being translated intoChinese to fit the need of domestic audience and gain more popularity. Naturally,there is a growing need for more professional and performable translation ofplays. Many current translation of theatre texts are incompetent not becausethey are incorrect, but because they are not suitable for stage performing.With its special spatiotemporal feature of theatre, the audience cannot thinkover the whole content while watching the play in a theatre. The value of theplay cannot be fully presented if When the audience’s comprehension for thetext does not match with their comprehension for the play. Therefore unlike thetranslation of other texts, theatre translation must emphasize onperformability instead of just pursing “faithfulness”.
This essay aims to explore thestrategies and methods of theatre translation,based on the perspective of Skopos theory, Susan Bassnett’sperformability principle and compare the different versions of translation ofthe text of Amadeus as an example.
