In the fields of Second Language Acquisition, vocabulary learning occupies a crucial status. However, the majority of this work has focused on the identification of learning strategies or concentrated on the lexical changes, and have lacked the comparative analysis of the relationship of language learning strategies and vocabulary size. This study examines not only students’ vocabulary size by a vocabulary test, but also supplements such analysis with some qualitative data of the use of learning strategies through a questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. Four grades of English majors in Wuhan University of Technology will be engaged in the study.
Linguist Oxford divided the language learning strategies into six main strategies: Memory Strategy, Cognitive Strategy, Compensation Strategy, Metacognitive Strategy, Affective Strategy, Social Strategy. Schmitt’s vocabulary learning strategies include two macro strategies: Discovery Strategies and Consolidation Strategies. The Discovery Strategies consist of Determination Strategies and Social Strategies. The Consolidation Strategies include Social Strategies, Memory Strategies, Cognitive Strategies and Metacognitive Strategies. Based on Paul Nation’s vocabulary size test and Oxford’s language learning strategies and Schmitt’s vocabulary learning strategies, the study will design a questionnaire to collect data. According to the data, then an interview will be conducted to 20 students among different grades and I will make a voice record about their interview of the use of vocabulary learning strategies and their understanding of vocabulary learning. The study is designed to analyze the impact of vocabulary learning strategies on vocabulary size so as to answer the following questions:
