As one of the classic short stories of Doris Lessing, A Woman on a Roof introduces a simple story between three work men of different ages and a sexy rich woman who enjoys the cozy sunbath in nothing but bikini and ignores their flirting, treats them indifferently. The roof not only indicates the setting of the story, but also plays as a micro model of the social situation at that time, in which the feminist movement was prevailing and the conflict between different social ranks became sharper. The author portrayed a vivid and impressive image of the woman on a roof through admiring her great courage to challenge constraints from patriarchy and seek freedom persistently. This paper attempts to analyze the hatred of three main characters, combines with the description of their varied thoughts and responses to that lady, and explores the deep reasons of their angers, especially the process of Tom’s psychological changes before and after his dream’s disillusionment, so as to reveal the multiple themes as well as the author’s concern about the story through those conflicts.
