This paper overtly concerns who the real theft is in Katherine Anne Porter’s story The Theft stemming from the effects of material deprivation of people’s living in the great depression. As the corollary of material and spiritual deficiency, the janitress is evidently a theft, but in some degree everyone in the story is a theft. Physically, the heroine’s stolen purse is a main clue which reveals the conflict between the “haves” and “have-nots”. Psychologically, everyone’s mental status is disillusioned at the mercy of social materialism and not until is the purse stolen the heroine’s spiritual is awakening. On reading the title’s implications, this paper goes beyond simply narrating tragic characters but intends to reveal what leads a man to be a theft.
