Thomas Hardy is regarded as a master of environment - character novels, skillful in narration with recurring images by means of symbolization, metaphor and allusion, etc. In his best novel of the “Wessex” series--Tess of the D’Urbervilles, the image of water mainly referring to rivers within the environment in which the story happened was repeated in different states in different phases of the story. Thereby, the rivers like Blackmoor and Froom depicted the states of Tess’s life, signified her doom and alluded to stories and doctrines of the Bible which shed some light on the resolution of conflicts. This paper is intended to illuminate the symbolic meaning, the function in plotting and contribution in the thematic expression of the image of water in Tess of the D’Urbervilles. Therefore a new perspective is expected to be offered for further understanding this novel.
